ADamODi - chArukEsi - Adi

In this Krithi Thyagaraja says that Rama slighted a great devotee like Anjaneya by not talking to him, but asking Lakshmana to talk. Thyagaraja feels that Rama may not care him.

P ADamoDi galadE rAmayya mATa || Why Rama was so reserved, even to talk to Anjaneya? ||
AP tODu needa neevE yanuchu bhakti tO
gooDi pAdamula baTTina mATa ||
He is inseperable from Rama. He is at Rama's feet with all devotion. ||
C chaduvu lanni telisi sankarAmsuDai
sadayu DASu ga sambhavundu mrokka
kadalu tammuni balka jEsitivi
gAkanu thyAgarAjEpATi mATa ||
He is the most learned and he is the incarnation of Siva. He is the son of Vayu (the Wind God) and he is bowing. ||

But you asked your younger brother Lakshmana to talk to him (Anjaneya). Then what is after all Tygaraja for you? ||


anupama - aTaNa - Adi

In this keertana Rama is described as an ocean of virtues. Thyagaraja gives the examples of Draupadi and Gajendra whom Rama rescued.

P anupama gunAmbudhi yani ninnu
neranammi yanusarinchina vAdanaiti ||
You are unparalleled ocean of virtues,
I follow you faithfully
C manupakaye yunnavu manupathi vrasi mEnanupa
mA kevaru vinumA dayarAni ||
If you do not protect us, who is there for us
to show kindness, Oh Master of the Manus (Vishnu)
C janaka jAmAtavai janaka jAmAtavai
janaka jAlamu chAlu chAlunu haree ||
You are the son-in-law of Janaka, Oh father Hari, enough is your delay
C kanaka paTa dhara nannu kana kapaTa mEla tanu
kanaka paThanamu sEtu gAni booni ||
Oh golden dressed Rama, why don't you see me, you can study me latter on
C kala lOna neevE sakala lOka nAdhA kO
kala lOku vaga nichchi gAchinadi vini ||
You are in my dreams, Oh Lord of all lokas.
I heard that you protected Draupadi from humiliation by giving sarees.
C rAja kula kalasAbdhi rAja sura pAla gaja
rAja rakshaka thyagaraja vinuta ||
You are the moon of Kshatriya Kings, the ruler of all gods
and the saviour of Gajendra. You are worshipped by Thyagaraja.

appa rAma bhakti - pantuvarALi - roopaka

In this Kruti, Tyagaraja addresses Rama as father and requests him to protect like eyelid. He says that love of Sita, obedience of Lakshmana, patience of Bharata and devotion of Anjaneya show Rama's greatness.

P appa rAma bhakti yanto gopparA mA || Devotion to Father Rama is great.
AP trippuTala nu deerchi kanTi reppa valenu gAchumA || He solves all problems and protects like an eyelid protects an eye.
C lakshmi dEvi valachunA lakshmaNunDu golachunA
sookshma buddhi gala bharatuDU choochi choochi solasunA mA ||
Would Lakshmi love him? Would Lakshmana worship him?
Would clever Bharata wait for him patiently ?
C Sabari yengilinichunA chandra dharuDu mechchunA
abala swayam prabhaku daiva machala padavi nichcunA mA ||
Will Sabari offer tasted fruits? Would Siva praise him?
Would he give salvation to Swayam Prabha?
C kapi vAridhi dATunA kaliki rOTa gaTTunA
aparAdhi thyAga rAjukAnandamu chAlunA mA ||
Would a monkey ( Anjaneya) cross the sea ?
Would YaSoda tie him (Krishna) to a grinding stone?
Thyagaraja is happy that his faults would certainly be pardoned by Rama.

alaka lalla - madhyamAvathi - roopaka

In this Krithi Viswamitra's joy on seeing Rama's beauty while he was destroying Maricha and while Rama was lifting Siva's bow is very well described.

P alaka lalla laADa gani ArANmuni yeTu pongeno || The dancing locks on the face of Rama filled Viswamitra's heart with joy.
AP cheluvu meera ganu mAreechuni mada maNache vELa || When Rama was destroying arrogant demon Mareecha, Viswamitra's heart was filled with joy.
C muni kanu saiga delisi siva dhanuvunu virachE samaya
muna thyAgarAja vinutuni mOmuna ranjillu ||
On the sage's indication with eyes, Rama lifted Siva's bow.
At that time Rama's face was jubiliant.
He is worshipped by Thyagaraja.

aDigi Sukhamu - madhyamAvathi - chApu

In his Krithi Thyagaraja tells that God sometimes bestows boons that may appear contrary to the wishes of the devotees. He gives examples of Sita, Devaki etc, who had to face troubles. But ultimately it is proved that there is a purpose behind the events.

P aDigi sukhamu levvaranu bhavinchirirA Adi moolamA rAma || Who enjoyed boons by requesting you, Oh Rama the Primordial.
AP saDalani pApa timira kOTi soorya sArva bhowma sArasAksha sadguNa ni || The darkness of Sin clings, Oh the King of million suns O gentle Rama.
C Asrainchi vara maDigina seeta yadavi bOnAye
Asa haraNa rakkasi ishTamaDuga apuDe mukku pOye O rAma ||
Sita's desire to see hermitages resulted in her suffering in forests.
Demon Surpanakha desired Rama, but she lost her ear and nose Oh Rama ||
C vAsiga nAradamouni varamaDaga vanita roopuDAye
Asimchi doorvAsu DannamaDuga apuDe mandamAye O rAma ||
Narada was curious to know God's Maya, only to be transformed into a woman.
Doorvasa asked food for fun. But to his dismay he lost his appetite, Oh Rama
C sutuni vEDuka jooDa dEvaki yaDuga yasOda chooDanAye
satulella rati bhikshamaDuga vAri vAri patula veeDanAye O rAma ||
Devaki desired a child to play with. But Yasoda was blessed with that pleasure.
When gopika's craved for Krishna, they had to desert their husbands.
C neekE daya buTTi brOtuvO brOvavO nee guTTu bayalAye
sAkEta dhAma sree thyAgarAja nuta swami yETi mAyA O rAma ni ||
Whether you show mercy or not is no more a secret.
What is this mystery, Oh Lord of Thyagaraja, Oh Saketa Rama.

amma rAvamma - kalyANi - khanDa chApu

Garlands of Tulasi leaves are very dear to Sri Maha Vishnu. So Tulasi is worshipped as Mother Tulasi. Tyagaraja eulogizes the qualities of Tulasi, saying that Tulasi bestows us tranquility in this temporal world and in the spiritual world as well.

vamma satatamu padamulE namminA namma ||
Oh Mother Tulasi, please come to protect me. I am always devoted to your feet ||
AP nemmadi ni nee vihaparammu losagudu vanuchu
kamma viltuni tanDri kalanaina bayaData||
You bestow me tranquility and bliss in this temporal and as well as in the spiritual worlds. Visnu the father of Manmadha (cupid) is never away from you even in His dream. ||
C nee mrudu tanuvunu gani nee parimaLamunu gani
nee mahatmyamunu gani neerajAkshi
tAmarasa daLa nEtruDu tyAgarAjuni mitruDu
prEmatO siramunanu beTTu konnAdaTa ||
Seeing your delicate form, appreciating your fragrance, admiring your greatness, the lotus eyed Vishnu is very much delighted to adorn you on his head. He is very dear to Tyagaraja ||

anurAgamu lEni - saraswati - roopakam

In this kruti, Tyagaraja explains the right way to attain real bliss through affection and devotion to God. He exhorts that one should strive to find happiness in his mind only but not in the external world.

P anurAgamu lEni mansuna sujnAnamu rA || True wisdom will not dawn in anyone who is devoid of affection and devotion to God. ||
AP ghanu laina antar gyAnula kerukEgAni || Only the enlightened persons who try to find bliss in their inner conscience but not in the external world are blessed with true wisdom. ||
C vaga vagagA bhujiyinchE vAriki truptow reeti
saguNa gnAnamu paini sowkhyamu tyAgarAjanuta ||
Only the hungry persons who eat food in a relaxed mood get real satisfaction and strength. In the same way, deriving pleasure in worshipping the divine form of God, blossoms true wisdom and bliss. Oh lord of Tyagaraja. ||
