jagadAnanda kAraka - nATa - Adi

In this pancharatna keertana, Tyagaraja expresses his immense devotion to Rama, saying that He is the bestower of universal happiness, that he is worshipped by all devatas, Brahma, and also Siva. Tyagaraja elaborates various deeds performed by Rama and Krishna. Finally, he says that He is always in the hearts of great seers and devotees.

P jaga dAnanda kArakA jaya jAnaki prANa nAyaka || Oh Rama, the Lord of Janaki, you are the bestower of universal happiness.
AP gaganAdhipa satkulaja rAja rAjESwara
suguNakara sura sEvya bhavya dAyaka sadA sakala ||
You are the lord of the skies, born in noble family, the king of kings,the embodiment of good qualities, served by devatas, and the sustainer of the world.
C1 amara tAraka nichaya kumuda hita pari poorNAnagha
sura surabhooja dadhi payOdhi vAsa haraNa
sundara tara vadana sudhAmaya vachO brinda gOvinda
sAnanda mAvara ajarApta SubhakarAnEka ||
You are like the moon and the devatas are like stars.
You are sinless and the absolute.
You are kalpataru (wish fulfilling tree) to devatas (celestial beings).
You stole milk and curd.
You have a beautiful face and your words are like nectar.
You are the husband of Lakshmi.
You are eternal bestower of happiness.
C2 nigama neerajAmruta pOshaka animisha vairi
vArida sameekaraNa khaga turanga satkavi hrudAlaya
agaNita vAnarAdhipa natAnghri yuga ||
You are the sustainer of the nectar in the Vedas.
You are like a tempest, blowing off enemies of devatas, who are like clouds.
Garuda bird is your vehicle.
You stay in the hearts of poets.
You are the master of countless number of monkeys.
C3 indra neela mani sannibhApaghana chandra soorya nayanA pramEya vA
geendra janaka sakalESa Subhra nAgEndra Sayana Samana vairi sannuta ||
You shine like a blue sapphire, with the sun and moon as your eyes.
You are Vishnu the father of Brahma.
You recline on Nagendra (serpent) and even Siva worships you.
C4 pAda vijita mouni SApa sava paripAla vara mantra grahaNa lOla
parama Santa chitta janakajAdhipa sarOja bhava varadAkhila ||
You redeemed Ahalya from the curse of Gautama.
You are absolutely serene and peaceful.
You are the husband of Sita, Janaka’s daughter.
You blessed Brahma who was born in the lotus.
C5 SruShTi sthityanta kAraka amita kAmita phalada asamAna gAtra
Sachee pati nutAbdhi madaharAnurAga rAga rAjita kadhA sAra hita ||
You create, sustain, and dissolve..
You bestow boons.
You have unique body and Indra worships you.
You destroyed the ego of Samudra (sea).
You are embodiment of love and compassion, the essence of Ramayana epic.
C6 sajjana mAnasAbdhi sudhAkara kusuma vimAna surasa ripu karAbja
lAlita charaNAvaguNAsura gaNa madaharaNa sanAtanAjanuta ||
You are like moon to the ocean-like hearts of devotees.
You posess flying mount Pushpaka.
Anjaneya the vaniquisher of demoness Surasa, comforts your feet.
You dispelled the pride of number of demons.
You are eternal. Brahma adores you.
C7 OmkAra panjara keera pura hara sarOja bhava kESavAdi roopa
vAsava ripu janakAntaka kalA dharApta ghruNA kara
SaraNAgata jana pAlana sumanO ramaNa
nirvikAra nigama sAratara ||
You are like the parrot, in the cage of Omkara. You are the embodiment of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheswara.
You destroyed Ravana, the father of Indrajit. You are the abode of kindness and the favorite of Siva.
You take care of those who seek shelter.
You are not attached to anyone. You are the essence of the Vedas.
C8 kara dhruta Sara jAlAsura madApa haraNa vanee surAvana
kaveena bilaja mouni kruta charitra sannuta Sree tyAgarAja sannuta||
By showering arrows, you dispelled the ego of demons and protected the devatas.
Great poet Valmiki wrote your great story Ramayanam.
You are worshipped by Thyagaraja.

purANa purusha nruvArAtmajA Srita parAdheena khara virAdha rAvana
virAvaNa anagha parASara manOhara abhikruta tyAgarAja sannuta ||

You are Dasaratha's son and an exemplary person.
You are always available to your devotees.
You destroyed Ravana, Khara, and other demons.
You won the heart of Parasara.
Tyagaraja worships you.
C10 agaNita guNa kanaka chEla sAla vidaLana aruNAbha samAna charaNa
apAra mahimAdbhuta sukavi jana hrutsadana sura muni gaNa
vihita kalaSa neera nidhijAramaNa pApa
gaja nrusimhva tyAgarAjAdi nuta ||
You have countless virtues. Your feet are orange colored, like the rising son, and you wear golden dress. You are omni-potent and always remain in the hearts of poets. All the devatas and sages adore you. You are the husband of Lakshmi, Samudra’s daughter. You dispel sins, just as a lion destroys an elephant. Tygaraja worships you.


duDuku gala - gowLa -Adi

In this pancharatna keertana, Tyagaraja considers himself a guilty person, who commited innumerable sins and doubts whether his master, Rama, would forgive him. He says that he wasted his time in pursuit of worldly pleasures, moving in bad company, instead of enjoying the nectar of devotion to his lord Rama.

P duDuku gala nannE dorA koDuku brOchurA entO || Which master will protect an evil one like me?
AP kaDu durvishayAkrushTuDai gaDiya gaDiyaku ninDAru || Who would protect me, who is often and on attracted by evil actions?
C1 Sree vanitA hrutkumudAbja avAngmAnasa gOchara || Just as the moon blooms a lily, you make the lotus heart of Lakshmi happy.
You are beyond the comprehension of my mind and expression.
C2 sakala bhootamula yandu neevai yunDagA madi lEka bOyina || I failed to know that you are the embodiment of all elements.
C3 chiruta prAyamula nAdE bhajanAmruta rasa viheena kutarkuDaina || I wasted my childhood in futile logic and neglected the nectar of devotion to God.
C4 para dhanamula koraku norula madi karaga balki kaDupu nimpa tiriginaTTi || I flattered the rich for wealth to feed myself.
C5 tana madini bhuvini soukhyapu jeevanamE yanuchu sadA dinamulu gaDipE || I thought only worldly pleasure is life and wasted all my time.
C6 teliyani naTa viTa kshudrulu vanitalu swavaSa mouTa kupadiSinchi santa silli swara layambu lerungakanu SilAtmulai subhaktulaku samAnamanu || Some actors, dancers, and musicians taught women just to attract them, in spite of their poor quality of laya and swara.
They pose as devotees.
They are stone hearted.
C7 drushTiki sArambagu lalanA sadanArbhaka sEnAmita dhanAdulanu dEvAdi dEva neranammiti gAkanu nee padAbja bhajanambu marachina || I believed that attractive wife, children, home, friends and money are everything, forgetting my devotion to your lotus feet.
C8 chakkani mukha kamalambunu sadA nA madi lO
smaraNa lEkanE durmadAndha janula kOri
paritApamula chE dagili nogili
durvishaya durAsalanu rOya lEka
satata maparAdhinai chapala chittuDa naina ||
I ignored to keep your beautiful face in my mind. I moved among arrogant people and faced many troubles. I could not get rid of evil persons and greed. I lost all balance. I feel guilty.
C9 mAnavatanu durlabhamanuchu nenchi paramAnanda mondalEka
mada matsara kAma lObha
mOhulaku dAsuDai mOsa boti gAka
modaTi kulaju Daguchu bhuvini
Soodrula panulu salpuchu nunTini gAka
narAdhamulanu rOya rasa viheena mainanu sAdhimpa tAru mAru ||
I did not know how fortunate I am to get human birth but I became a slave to arrogance, desire, and greed.
Though born in a pious Brahmana family I was not doing jobs befitting my birth.
I could not keep away the worst people.
C10 satula ku konnALLU Astikai sutulaku konnALLu
dhana tatula kai tiri giti nayya
tyAgarAjApta iTu vanTi||
I spent some days for pleasing women, some days struggling for my children, and some days in the pursuit of wealth.
Oh Rama, my intimate lord, save this kind of Tyagaraja.


sAdhinchenE - Arabhi - Adi

In this pancharatna keertana, Tygaraja accuses Rama saying that He firmly achieved his intentions, sometimes in incomprehensible ways. He gives the example of Yasoda, who was in maya (illusion) that Krishna was her own son, though he was born to Devaki. Tygaraja extols the qualities of Rama and enumerates the different advices given by his lord Rama. He says that Rama counseled him how to lead an ideal life.

AP bOdhinchina sanmArga vachanamula bonku jEsi tA paTTina paTTU || Belying His own good preaching, He achieved what He firmly wanted to.
C1 sama yAniki tagu mATa lADe ne || He spoke smartly as the occasion demanded .
C2 devakee vasudEvula nEginchinaTu || He lured Devaki and Vasudeva to go to Kamsa.
C3 rangESuDu sad gangA janakuDu sangeeta sampradAyakuDu || Ganga was born at his feet. He is Rangesa. He kept up the tradition of music.
C4 gOpee manOradha mosanga lEka nE gEliyu chEsE vADu || He did not grant the wishes of gopikas, but only teased them.
C5 vanitala sadA sokka chEyuchunu
mrokka chEsE paramAtmu Dadiyu gAka
yaSoda tana yuDanchu mudambu nanu
muddu beTTa navvu chunDu hari ||
He teased Gopika maids and made them bow and beg.
He is the Supreme Soul.
Krishna smiled when Yasoda kissed Him, thinking that He was her son. (He was born to Devaki.)
C6 parama bhakta vatsaluDu suguNa pArA
vArunDAjanma managhu Dee kali bAdhala
teerchu vADanuchu nE hrudambu jamuna choochu chunDaga ||
He has all virtues.
He is affectionate to devotees. His devotees are dear to him.
He is the redeemer of troubles in this kaliyuga.
He is sinless.
I see him in my heart.
C7 harE rAma chandra raghukulESa mrudu bhAsha
SEsha Sayana para nAri sOdarAja virAja
turaga rAja rAja vinuta nirAmAyApa ghana
saraseeruha daLAksha yanuchu vEDu konnanu tA brOvakanu ||
He is Ramachandra, the soft spoken and the lord of Raghu dynasty.
He reclines on Sesha serpent and is the brother of Parvati.
He has no beginning.
He shines and Garuda worships Him.
His eyes are like lotus petals.
I implore, why don't you protect me?
C8 Sree vEnkatESa supra kASa sarvOnnata sajjana mAnasa
nikEtana kankAmbara dhara lasan makuTa kunDala
virAjita harE yanuchu nE pogaDaga
tyAgarAja gEyuDu mAnavEndruDai na ramachandruDu ||
He is Venkatesa. He is the topmost. He shines.
He lives in the hearts of pious people. He wears golden dress and his earrings shine.
Tyagaraja is praising the lord of humanity.
C9 samayAniki tagu mATa lADene
sadbhaktula naData liTla nenE
amarika gA nA pooja konenE aluga vaddanenE
vimukhula tO chEra bOku manenE
veta kalgina tALu kommane nE
dama SamAdi sukha dAyakuDagu
Sree tyAgaraja nutuDu chenta rAkanE ||
He spoke smartly as the situation demanded.
He told how the real devotees should behave.
He accepted my prayers but asked me not to be dissatisfied and told me not to mix with opponents.
He advised me to be patient when in distress.
He bestows peace and happiness.
The lord of Tyagaraja has not come near.


kana kana ruchi ra - varALi - Adi

In this pancharatna keertana, Tyagaraja tells how he enjoyed gazing at the beautiful visage of Rama, which has magical power. He gives the examples of merciful deeds of Rama, like bestowing eternal position to Dhruva and giving salvation to Jatayu bird. He says that Rama’s mercy is limitless and adds that even gods Siva, Narada, Sita, Anjaneya, etc. are witness to testify His greatness.

AP dina dina munu manasuna chanuvuna ninnu You are in my heart fondly always.

There is magical power in your tender face.

Sita with her beautiful, glossy face is looking at you from the corner of her eye in a graceful way.
C3 bAlArkAbha suchEla maNimaya
mAlA lankrita kandhara sarasijAksha varaka
pOla suruchira kireeTa dhara satatambu manasAraga ||
You are bright like the rising sun.
Your dress is studded with gems.
Your neck is decorated with garlands.
Your eyes are like lotus flowers.
Your cheeks are glossy.
You wear a crown.
I look at you heartily always.
C4 sApatnee mAtayau suruchi chE karNa Soola maina mATa veenula
churukkana tALaka Sree harini dhyAninchi sukhimpaga lEdA yaTu
mruga madalalAma Subha niTala vara jaTAyu mOksha phala da
pava mAna sutuDu needu mahima delpa
seeta telisi valachi sokka lEdAreeti ninnu ||
Suruchi, the step mother of Dhruva, insulted him very harshly.
When he prayed to Sri Hari was he not blessed with eternal glory?.
Your forehead has kasturi tilakam (mark of musk on forehead).
You gave salvation to Jatayu bird.
Anjaneya, the son of wind god, described your greatness to Sita (in Lanka).
Was not Sita elated with love and joy?
C5 sukhAspada vimukhAmbu dhara pavana vidEha mAnasa
vihArApta sura bhooja mAnita guNAnka chidAnanda
khaga turanga dhruta radhAnga parama dayA kara
karuNArasa varuNa laya bhayApa harA Sree raghupatE
You are the bestower of happiness.
Your opponents are blown away like clouds by a gust of wind.
You are always in the mind of Vaidehi.
You are intimate to Devatas.
You are eternal bliss.
Garuda bird is your vehicle.
You hold chakra.
You are ever merciful and it is like a limitless ocean.
You dispel our fears, oh Sri Raghupati.
C6 kAminchi prEma meera karamula needu pAda kamalamula
baTTu konu vAdu sAkshi rAma nAma rasikuDu kailAsa
sadanuDu sAkshi mariyu nArada parASara Suka Saunaka
purandhara nagajA dharaja mukhyula sAkshi gAda
sundarESa sukha kalaSambudi vAsA sritulakE ||
Anjaneya who always is at your lotus feet, Siva whose abode is Kailasa chant your name "Taraka Rama". They are witnesses to glorify you.
Indra, Siva, Narada, Parasara, Suka, Sounaka, Purandhara, Parvati (Nagaja), Sita (Dharinija) are witnesses to testify your greatness.
Oh handsome Rama, you live on the ocean.
Your seekers love to see you.
C7 satatamu prEmapooritu Dagu tyAgarAja
nuta mukhajita kumuda hita varada ninnu ||
You are full of love always.
You are brighter than the moon.
You bestow boons.
You are worshipped by Tyagaraja.


endaro mahAnubhAvulu - Sree - Adi

In this pancharatna keertana, Tyagaraja pays his obeisance to innumerable great personalities who always kept Rama in their hearts and enjoyed supreme bliss. He says that these great seers sing spiritual songs to purify their mind and body and they believe that all other paths are false. He adds that they know the real meaning of the Vedas, Bhagawata, Ramayana, Gita, and other scriptures. Further, he says that there is absolute integration in their mind, speech, and action.

P endarO mahAnu bhAvulu andariki vandanamu || Salutations to all the great and eminent men.
AP chanduru varNuni anda chandamunu hrudayAra
vinda muna joosi brahmAnanda manubhavinchu vA ||
I salute those who see his beautiful moonlike face in their hearts and enjoy supreme bliss.
C1 sAma gAna lOla manasija lAvaNya dhanya moordhanyu || These great persons are absorbed in Sama veda.
They are eminent and also gentle at heart.
C2 mAnasa vana chara vara sanchAramu nilipi moorti bAguga poDaganE vA || They discipline their fickle minds by singing your keerthana.
C3 saraguna pAdamulaku swAntamanu
sarOjamunu samarpaNamu sEyu vA ||
They submit their lotus-like heart at your feet.
C4 patita pAvanu DanE parAtparuni gurinchi
paramArtha magu nija mArgamu tOnu bADuchunu
sallApamutO swara layAdi rAgamulanu teliyu vA ||
He is the purifier of the sins of degraded people.
The great men sing his praise.
They sing spiritual songs with all ramifications of swara and laya, praising the supreme lord.
C5 hari guNa maNu lagu saramulu gaLamuna
SObhillu bhakta kOTu lilalO telivi tO chelimi tO
karuNa galgi jaga mellanu sudhA drushTi chE brOchu vA ||
In this world several devotees wear gem like virtues of Hari as garlands.
They look at the world with great kindness and intelligence.
C6 hoyalu meera naDalu galgu sarasuni sadA
kanula joochuchunu pulaka Sareerulai yAnanda
payOdhi nimagnulai mudambunanu yaSambu kala vA ||

They are filled with ecstasy to see his gait and grace.
They become famous as his devotees.
C7 parama bhAgavata mouni vara SaSi vibhAkara sanaka sanandana digeeSa
sura kimpurusha kanaka kaSipu suta nArada tumburu pavana soonu
bala chandra dhara Suka sarOja bhava bhoosura varulu parama pAvanulu
ghanulu SAswatulu kamala bhava sukhamu sadAnu bhavulu gAka ||

Great devotees, great seers, devatas, the moon, the sun, Sanaka, Sanandana, Narada, Tumburu, Anjaneya, Siva, Suka, Brahma, Brahmanas, and other pious people are all immersed, keeping you always in their heart.
C8 nee mEnu nAma vaibhavammulanu nee parAkrama dhairya mula Santa mA
nasamu eevulanu vachana satyamunu raghu vara nee yeDa sadbhakti yu
janinchakanu durmatamulanu kalla chEsi naTTi nee madi
neringi santatambu nanu guNa bhajanAnanda keertanamu sEyu vA ||
They know the greatness of your name, your valour, your tranquility, your sacrifice, your truthfulness, Oh Raghuvara!
They know that without devotion to you, all other faiths are false and they derive joy in singing your praise.
C9 bhAgavata rAmAyaNa geetAdi Sruti Sastra purANapu marmamulan
sivAdi shaNmatamula gooDhamula muppadi mukkOTi surAnta
rangamula bhAvamula nerigi bhAva rAga layAdi soukhyamu che
chirAyuvul galigi niravadhi sukhAtmulai tyAga rAjAptu laina vA ||
They know the inner meaning of Bhagavata, Ramayana, Geeta, Vedas, Puranas, the secret of six religions and the thoughts of 33 crores of devatas.
They sing with bhava (meaning), raga, and tala.
They live a long life happily and they are intimate to Tyagaraja.
C10 prEma muppiri gonu vELa nAmamunu dalachE vAru
rAma bhaktuDaina tyAgarAja nutuniki nija dAsu le ||
They think of Rama's name integrating their thought, speech, and action (muppiri).
They are the real servants of Tygaraja's lord.
